A Hundred Roses, a Hundred and Fifty, a Thousand: What the Grand Gesture Costs in London

There is a moment in some occasions when a bouquet, however good, is the wrong size for what needs saying. A proposal. A tenth anniversary, or a fortieth. The apology that has to be impossible to ignore. A reception where the flowers are the room.

For those, people ask us for roses by the hundred, and then they ask the questions this page answers: what does a hundred roses actually look like, what does a thousand cost, how is it made, and what does someone do with it afterwards.

A hundred roses

A hundred roses is the first number that changes the shape of a gift. It is too many for a bouquet to carry gracefully, so at a hundred the form changes: a heart, either free-standing or set into a heart-shaped velvet box; a round box, packed so the surface is solid roses; or a standing arrangement on a base.

A hundred red roses in a free-standing heart is £500. The same hundred in a heart-shaped velvet box, La Grande Romance, is also £500. A hundred long-stemmed roses in a bouquet, for those who want the flowers rather than the form, is £500 in our rose bouquets. In every case the roses are a single variety and a single colour, red, white or pink, because a hundred of one thing is the point.

A hundred and fifty

At a hundred and fifty the arrangement becomes an object with a footprint. À la rose is a hundred and fifty roses at £1,000, and rises to three hundred at £2,000. Extravagant is a hundred and fifty roses in a basket at £750. These are pieces that need a table of their own; think about where they will stand before you order, and tell us if it is a small flat, because we can advise on the form.

Three hundred to a thousand

How it is delivered

By our own team, which at this scale means two people and a van, not a courier with a parcel. We photograph the finished piece before it leaves and send you the picture. If the surprise depends on timing — a proposal at seven, a hotel room before check-in — tell us, and we will work to the hour as far as London traffic allows. For proposals in restaurants and hotels we liaise with the manager directly so that nothing is left in a lobby.

What happens to it afterwards

This is the question people are embarrassed to ask, so here is the answer. A hundred roses in a box or a heart last as any of our boxes do: five to seven days with a little water. A free-standing heart or a stand of a thousand is a week's installation; when it is over, we can collect the structure and, if you like, return with something smaller for the table. The roses themselves can be dried, and many people keep a few. Or choose the preserved version of the hundred-rose box, which needs no water and holds for a year.

One piece of advice

Decide the message before the number. A hundred roses says something a bouquet cannot; a thousand says something a hundred cannot; but a thousand roses sent for a birthday will be read as a proposal, and it is hard to walk that back.
