Kept as it arrived

Flowers are living things, and a few minutes of attention is what keeps them looking as they did when the box was opened. Everything below takes less time than reading it.

Fresh flowers in a box

The arrangement drinks from a water reservoir set into the base of the box, so it needs no vase and no arranging. A little water, now and then, is all it asks of you.

What it needsWater at the base, shade, and a cool room.

  1. Find it a cool place

    Indoors, out of direct sunlight, between 18 and 22 degrees. Not on a radiator, a television or under a ceiling fan, and away from heating or cooling vents.

  2. A teacup of water, regularly

    Pour slowly into the centre of the arrangement so it reaches the base of the box. Touch the base with a fingertip: if it feels dry, it is time. In a warm room, or if the box includes hydrangeas, it will drink more often.

  3. Re-cut if a stem flags

    Lift the stem, take an inch off at a 45-degree angle with a sharp knife, and return it to the base. It will begin drinking again almost at once.

Bouquets and arrangements in vases

Cut flowers no longer live in soil; their new home is the water you give them. Fresh water, clean stems, and they will reward you.

What it needsFresh water, clean stems, and a cool room.

  1. Keep the water fresh

    A full bouquet drinks more than you expect. Top up whenever the level drops, and change the water completely as soon as it begins to look cloudy.

  2. Re-cut the stems

    Each time you change the water, take an inch off every stem at a 45-degree angle and return it to the vase straight away.

  3. Keep it cool and out of the sun

    The same rules as the boxes: 18 to 22 degrees, no direct sunlight, no radiators, no fruit bowl beside it — ripening fruit is unkind to cut flowers.

Preserved roses

Real roses, preserved at full bloom. They ask for almost nothing, and the little they ask for is mostly to be left alone.

What it needsNo water, no sun, no damp. Nothing else.

  1. No water, ever

    Preserved roses are not living flowers. Water marks the petals and spoils them.

  2. Leave them in the box

    The roses are set into the box by hand and are not designed to be lifted out. Do not place anything on top of the arrangement.

  3. Out of the sun, away from damp

    Room temperature, 18 to 22 degrees, away from strong sunlight, heat and humidity — so not a bathroom, and not a windowsill.

  4. Dust, occasionally

    A soft brush or a gentle breath of cool air from a hairdryer, held at a distance. That is all.
